The Spanish top flight is traditionally dominated by one of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid - as a result, many fixtures across the season have lopsided odds, forcing bettors to target more niche markets, such as over/under goals and margin of victory.
It is also a league which is very possession oriented - more possession and teams taking care of the ball more means that usually the number of goals per game is lower than say the Premier League, forcing gamblers to grow familiar to out-of-the-mainstream.
The fiery rivalries between the top sides, particularly the El-Clasico derby between Real Madrid and Barcelona, and the Madrid derby between Real and Atletico, present intense excitement whenever they come around, and bets spike around these fixtures, with many bettors knowing more about these sides than most, providing them with an increased chance of a pay-out.
Very similar in layout to the Premier League, there are 20 competing teams, with the bottom three relegated to the second division, while the top seven teams compete for European football. Top four claim Champions League football, fifth and sixth claim Europa League, and seventh, and occasionally eighth depending on the Copa Del Rey winner earn themselves a spot in the Conference League.
Again, similar to the Premier League, La Liga takes place over 38 gameweeks, with the season starting in August and ending in May. The only interruptions to the league's progress come in September, October, November and March, when players go away for the international break.
Most games take place on weekends, but fixtures are sporadically played in mid-week across the season, with Wednesday and Thursday hosting a number of games around the Christmas period.
La Liga has its very own dedicated streaming service, La Liga TV, which shows every game across the season live on its website - subscription is £14.99 per month. Games are also shown on channels such as TNT Sports and Supersport - however, TNT Sports costs over double La Liga TV at £30.99, while Supersport is a more international broadcaster.
Of the 94 completed La Liga seasons completed, 75 of them have been won by the league's big three teams - Real Madrid have won eight more than their rivals Barcelona with 36, while Atletico Madrid have won on 11 occasions.
While Madrid may have won the most titles across the competitions history, Barcelona are the reigning champions, topping the league by four points in 2024/25.
