The UEFA Champions League is the biggest club competition each year, pitting some of Europe’s biggest sides against each other in a randomised league phase and knockout draw. With elite teams throughout the draw, the Champions League tends to provide exciting, goal-packed fixtures that bring markets such as over 3.5 goals into play.
With cross-league and cross-nation fixtures a regular occurrence, games in the competition are hard to predict, with their different playstyles and tactical approaches so different to one another - this means bettors must look at European form, experience and tactical adaptability, not just domestic form.
With the winners of the competition potentially playing 20 games across a campaign, as well as their respective domestic league and cup competitions, sides are forced to rotate personnel, meaning that the shape and makeup of a team can change drastically coming into a European fixture.
Having now adopted a league phase, each of the 36 qualified sides play eight fixtures (two games against sides from pot 1, 2, 3 and 4, decided by coefficient ranking), with the top eight sides automatically qualifying for the round of 16.
Teams that finish between ninth and 24th are thrown into a play-off round, a two-legged tie from which the winner will advance to also progress to the last 16. Once the last 16 is reached, the competition progresses as normal, with sides drawn against each other in two legged ties that they must win on aggregate in order to progress.
Any side that finishes below 24th in the League phase is eliminated from the competition, and unlike in the previous era when third place in the group stage could be thrown into the Europa League, there is no such escape if eliminated in the league phase.
The 2025/26 Champions League league phase is scheduled to be played from 16th/18th September through to January eighth.
For relevant teams, the play-off tie for a spot in the last 16 takes place in February, the Last 16 in March, the quarter finals in April, the semi-finals across the end of April and beginning of May, and the final is set to be scheduled in Budapest on May 30th 2026.
In the UK, Champions League football is most readily available on TNT Sports and Discovery +. Both broadcasters charge £30.99 per month, although Discovery + boasts content outside of sports, making it a better value deal.
Some knockout ties are also shown on Amazon Prime Video, which boasts a much more reasonable membership fee of £5.99.
Real Madrid have proved a dominant force in the Champions League since its foundation - their 15 Champions League trophies are more than double their nearest competitor, AC Milan of Italy. Spain have held something of a dominion over the competition this century, winning 12 of 26 finals played since 2000.
